October Volunteer Spotlight Features John Hankins

October 2, 2019

After several years of working as a social worker in a community mental health center, BCAP volunteer John Hankins made a career path change into business and IT. He has worked in the private sector at IBM, but he also has served for five years as the Chief Financial Officer of a nonprofit. Other than his years in social work, there always has been a “thread of finance” running through what he does.

John has had a strong personal connection to HIV since 1983, when someone very important to him died of AIDS–related illnesses. John also has lost two high school friends to this epidemic. In the spring of 2016, John was preparing to retire and was seeking a significant volunteer activity to add to his days. He reached out to the BCAP, and inquired about volunteering.

With his strong background in business and IT, John first joined BCAP’s Development Committee, which focuses on fundraising for BCAP’s HIV prevention and care services. Currently John is the Treasurer of BCAP’s Board of Directors and he is BCAP’s Finance Committee Chair. He loves the process of tracking the agency’s monthly financials. He says, “BCAP’s Board works well together and I enjoy doing the financial piece a lot.” John also enjoys interacting with the staff and people living with HIV who are accessing care services through BCAP. After participating in BCAP’s Volunteer Training, he began delivering groceries to five BCAP clients twice a month. He says, “I like doing something that needs to be done.” John really enjoys when he has the opportunity to chat with the people on his delivery route

Aside from his volunteer work, John enjoys cycling, playing the clarinet, gardening and being with his family. Since retiring from full time work, he has also started a consulting business which provides support for businesses using the Microsoft Azure cloud. His family also engages in volunteering and nonprofit work. One of his daughters has recently completed her Masters of Public Administration in nonprofit management and he says it has been nice to share this interest with her.

Thank you John, for being such a reliable grocery delivery volunteer every month, and for the care you take in choosing items according to each person’s dietary restrictions and preferences. This role is a huge support to people living with HIV and to BCAP staff. We are also grateful to benefit from the satisfaction nonprofit finance work clearly brings you! Recently you shared that “at BCAP there is always a feeling of purpose. We are all in this together doing the work. I never have any feelings but appreciation for our team effort.” John, on behalf of the staff and Board at BCAP, thank you for joining the team!
