July Volunteer Spotlight Features Yvonne Hammell

Yvonne Hammell began her involvement with BCAP as a donor. She had many friends living with HIV and she wanted to help the cause financially. Her daughter Tegan was a volunteer with BCAP’s prevention department at the time, and encouraged her mom to join her as a BCAP volunteer. The two love to spend time together so Yvonne joined in. In no time, she found a position that suits her perfectly.

In early 2015, Yvonne began shopping at Community Food Share (CFS) once a month to help supply BCAP’s food pantries. When Yvonne shops, she is always excited to show us what goodies she picked out for the people who access BCAP’s food pantries. Recently Yvonne recruited her partner Bryn to volunteer with her!

“People living with HIV have a lot on their plate, and I want to take away the worry about having enough good food to eat.” She adds, “It gives me warm fuzzies the whole time I am shopping. I really think about each item I choose. I love knowing that this helps meet the nutritional needs of our clients.” Yvonne also helps at BCAP fundraising events and community outreach opportunities whenever possible. She especially enjoys walking with her family members in Denver Pridefest with BCAP's Atlas program!

Yvonne works full-time for Elevations Credit Union. She appreciates that Elevations gives employees “Volunteer Time Off” so they can give back to the community in whatever way they choose.

When she isn’t working or volunteering, Yvonne enjoys crocheting while watching horror movies, being with her adult children Tegan and Seth, and snuggling her dog Zero, whose “special talent is shedding!” Yvonne has us laughing and smiling whenever our paths cross.
