VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Sam Samaniego
Sam Samaniego first learned about Boulder County AIDS Project (BCAP) thirteen years ago when he moved to Colorado from New York. He knew some special people who were clients at the time. Then in 2013, he started to volunteer in BCAP’s Boulder-based John Hodges Food Pantry.
As a Volunteer Bagger, Sam comes in the first and third Wednesday of April through December, to bag non-perishable groceries for people who are not able to get themselves to either of BCAP’s Food Pantries. The next day, grocery delivery volunteers come in to pack up the perishables and take all the bags on their way to 7-9 homes throughout Boulder County.
Sam’s work involves selecting groceries according to the detailed dietary restrictions and preferences on each client’s list, in order to bag food and household items that clients will actually use. His work saves hours of time for the delivery drivers when they arrive to BCAP to pack up the remaining perishables for each person.
Sam says of his volunteer position, “It’s a small way to be involved, but I know the clients are really grateful. I’ve needed to use other food banks in the past, and I know the helpful impact they can have on your life. It feels like a good way to contribute to society.”
Sam has also joined BCAP in walking in Denver Pridefest. He enjoys being with people and is quick to smile and laugh with others. Besides finding time to volunteer with BCAP, Sam loves to go running and the Bolder Boulder is a favorite race of his—he’s run it 13 times already! Go Sam! Sam further describes himself as “the proud father of a 24 year old marine, who is a tattoo artist. I’m also a dog lover and the proud parent of a gorgeous canine named Axel.”
Sam says he “can’t say enough about BCAP. I have come to learn that no matter what position or post you volunteer in, your time is greatly appreciated. BCAP is all about love and cherishes any and all time given.”
Thank you, Sam for caring so much for BCAP clients! We so appreciate you taking the extra time every month to get the bags packed just right!
