Bobby Tyman has been volunteering with BCAP since they were recruited to bartend at last year’s Local Legends Gala. They thought it was going to be a one-time thing, but they loved it and have since expanded their involvement with BCAP to Front Desk volunteering in the Boulder office, shopping once a month at Community Food Share (CFS) for BCAP’s food pantries and walking in Denver Pridefest with BCAP’s Atlas program. Bobby says, “I like to help in any way that I can! I love all the incredible people I’ve gotten to meet here—the staff and the people who use BCAP’s services. I’m constantly learning new things and getting a new perspective on life, and I love that!”
Bobby advises anyone volunteering with BCAP to “show up to the best of your ability and remember why you are here. If you’re a CFS shopper, give yourself closer to 3 hours to do the job! I always think it’s a quick stop, then I find myself digging through the deep box of snacks at CFS for special treats that I know a shopper at BCAP will enjoy. It can take some extra time “Tetris” fitting all of the boxes into my car to get them to BCAP!”
A barista at South Side Café, Bobby exclaims they absolutely love their “real” job! When they’re not volunteering or working, Bobby loves to read, hike, and rock climb in the gym. They like to go to Goodwill and pick up 4-5 books for $.50 each. They pass them on if they love them, otherwise the books are donated back to Goodwill. “Right now I’m reading Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and A Vision for Change, by Congressman John Lewis. Bobby says, “I’m liking it so far. I’m really curious to see what more wisdom I’ll gain from the writer.”
Bobby brings a grounded and competent energy to everything they do with BCAP. Bobby’s calm warmth and cheerful smile is much appreciated by staff and visitors alike. Bobby, we’re so thankful for all you do with BCAP and we hope you remain engaged with us for a long time to come!
