Sexual Health and AIDS Awareness Peer Education
Sexual Health AIDS Awareness Peer Education (SHAPE)

Are you a youth interested in sexual health? Want to find a way to be involved in your community while making an impact among your peers? THEN SHAPE IS FOR YOU!

What is SHAPE?

SHAPE was founded in 2002 as a youth-directed peer education program focused on educating youth about HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and contraception. It is a collaboration between Women’s Health’s Teen Clinic, and Boulder County AIDS Project (BCAP).

Why should you apply?

SHAPE is a unique peer-education program because it is youth-led. This means that your talents and interests will affect the program and guide it. Some outreach activities, such as World AIDS Day and National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, will occur each year; however, the direction of SHAPE and its impact on the community will change depending on the members. Being a member of SHAPE will allow you to become an expert on sexual health issues, provide you with leadership skills, and supply you an outlet to make a positive change in youth in Boulder County.

Requirements:

You must be passionate about sexual health and committed to decreasing rates of HIV, STIs, and pregnancy among teens. SHAPE is for high-school age youth.

Time Commitment:

As a SHAPEr, you are required to attend meetings on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Boulder. Also, you are required to attend 1-2 retreats (to be determined) during the year and meet with your mentors on a regular basis for check-ins.

SHAPErs participate in fun activities such as the following: attending local community fairs like Creek Fest; conducting presentations on HIV, STIs, and general sexual health in middle and high school classrooms; celebrating National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and World AIDS Day; attending Pro-Choice Lobby Day; and conducting condom zaps among peers.
Total time spent on SHAPE per month is dependent on how active you choose to be as well as what the SHAPErs want to accomplish.
