BCID

What is BCID?
The Beacon Center for Infectious Disease (BCID) is a specialty care clinic that provides expert care in HIV/AIDS as well as other infectious diseases, such as blood and bone infections. We are owned by Boulder Community Hospital and our physicians have privileges at Boulder Community Hospital and Avista Adventist Hospital. We work closely with primary care providers, community health clinics, and community service organizations to provide the best care possible.

What can I expect at my first visit to BCID?
At your first visit, you will meet our friendly front desk staff, Rosa and La. They will ask you to fill out “demographic forms” so we know how to reach you. We will take a copy of your insurance card. You will also fill out medical history/medication forms. Please bring a list of medications you take with the name of the medication, the dose, and how often you take the medication. If it is easier, please just bring all bottles of medications and our medical assistant can create a list. Forms generally take 15-20 minutes to complete, so come early. You will meet the medical assistant, who will take your weight and vital signs and review your medications and allergies. You will meet with your provider (either physician or nurse practitioner) who will take a detailed health history, review how HIV works and what lab values mean, order several blood and urine tests, and do a physical exam. He/she is there to answer any questions you have about HIV in general or your HIV health specifically.

Insurance/ADAP/CICP
What do I need to bring to my first appointment to BCID?

  1. If you do not have insurance, we can help you get set up for the Colorado Indigent Care Program (CICP), which covers the underinsured in Colorado. We can also help you enroll in the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) so your HIV medications can be free to you if you qualify. You will need to bring a Colorado identification card, proof of all income including SSI, SSDI, pension plans, alimony, a recent bank statement, estimated value of your vehicle or balances on any vehicle loans to your first appointment. Please make an appointment with Laura Haggerty on Mondays or Guy Lively the Program Manager on other days, so your first appointment at BCID can include a provider visit and insurance enrollment applications.
  2. If you are privately insured with an HMO or PPO, please bring your insurance card to your first appointment.
  3. All new patients to BCID should bring a detailed list of medications to your first appointment, including name of medication, dose, number of pills taken, and how often you take these pills. If you do not have a list, please bring all medication bottles with you to your first appointment.
  4. Please arrive 15-20 minutes early for your first appointment to fill out necessary insurance, financial, and medical history forms.
Please try to bring a copy of records from your last HIV provider. You can also ask your last provider to fax the records ahead of time to 303-938-3174.
